Constantine Roussos (.music)
Constantine Roussos has long been on the cutting edge of emerging technologies in the music entertainment and Internet (affiliate, social media, search & SEO) industry. He is the pioneer behind dotMusic (.MUSIC), the top-level domain name and industry standard for official music websites on the Web. It paves the way for the post-dotCOM era and next-generation of the Internet by building a home to everything related to music, giving music entities an exclusive, branded .MUSIC domain web address.

Chris Baumgartner, manager at Effect Partners: Chris has worked for five years helping to bring a more sustainable approach to marketing and touring. Effect Partners has worked with Jack Johnson, Black Eyed Peas, U2, and other big acts to green their tours by integrating recycling measures, energy saving strategies, and other sustainable practices. I will start with Chris and ask for an assessment of how the music industry has done in 2009-2010 in terms of sustainability. See http://www.effectpartners.com

Steve Casper, owner, Zero Impact Guitars: Starting in 1986, Steve, whose main company is Casper Guitar Technologies, began making sustainable guitars and now makes his “eco-axes” with “Smartwood” as dictated by the guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council. I hope Steve, whose work has been featured in BusinessWeek magazine, can tell us a little about the everyday musician's desire to go green, and how much the sustainability trend is tricklign down to the everyday picker. Steve will also have some of his wares on display in our listening lounge throughout the conference, and will probably play a tune or two himself. See http://www.zeroimpactguitars.com

Jonathan Gelbard, founder and executive director of www.ConservationValue.org: Combining the skills of a conservation scientist, sustainability experts, and communication specialist, Jonathan uses his nonprofit to build bridges between the science of sustainability and business solutions. His work involves the entertainment industry, and he produced the Rothbury Think Tank at the Rothbury Festival in Michigan and the eco-component of the Green Apple Festival in D.C. I will have Jonathan discuss the difference between greenwashing and true sustainability within the music business, have him highlight some successes and/or failures in this regard, and then get his assessment on the future of sustainability in music. See conservationvalue.org

John Lefebvre, musician/environmentalist: A former attorney straight outta Canada who started his songwriting career at age 56 after being busted for an Internet gambling operation, John is now an “eco-troubadour” who uses his music as a platform for spreading the message of environmentalism. His songs resonate with sustainable notions, and he's also an active supporter of the David Suzuki Foundation and the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education, both of which are located in Vancouver near his home. I'm hoping John can let us know why music can be a weapon against climate change, and clue us in on how he and other musicians are leading this charge. See www.johnlefebvre.com.

Craig Lyons, musician on The Second Life: Each month, more than one million people tune into SecondLife.com, where they can live a parallel existence as online avatars who, among other activities, like listening to live music. Craig is a real-life musician who plays as much as three times a day for these crowds, and makes real money in the process — often as much as $200 a gig, with sometimes three gigs a day. As such, he's touring the “world” and attracting actual fans without making much of a carbon footprint. I'll ask Craig to explain this bizarre arrangement, why it might even be better than a live show in a packed bar, and see how the virtual world can grow the music scene without trashing the planet. See http://world.secondlife.com/group/80ebeb75-15cc-1ada-9581-478617b070b8 and http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/09/entertainment/la-et-secondlife-concerts-20100609

Jacob Tell, CEO of Oniric Records and Oniracom: As the mastermind behind the websites for Jack Johnson, Brushfire Records, Counting Crows, Matisyahu, John Legend, Lenny Kravitz, and others, Jacob knows a thing or two about new media marketing, which is much less impactful than the traditional paper-based strategies. Additionally, Jacob produces the “Solutions for Dreamers” series of albums; the third season is out now and, among other artists, features the first new song from the Wailers in many years while also raising money for the World Food Programme. I will get Jacob to talk a little about the eco-advantages of new media marketing as well as the intersection of music and philanthropy in general. See http://oniricrecords.com and http://oniracom.com
